Shodhana chikitsa(purification)

Snehana and swedana are the preparatory procedures before panchakarma.
Shamana Chikitsa

Abhyangam
This is a special type of oil massage which is given according to the circulatory channels for 45 minutes per day for 7-14 days.

Shirodhara
Shirodhara, Shira means head and Dhara means continuous flow of liquid. In this medicated oil or buttermilk or medicated milk etc… are poured on the forehead in a particular method using a special pot for 30-45 minutes per day. This is effective for diseases above the neck, insomnia, memory loss, stress, paraplegia, spondylosis, fatigue, etc.
Nasyam
Nasyam is one among the panchakarma in this treatment medicated Taila[oil] or Swarasa [ juice] or Churna [powder] is administered into the nose as the condition of the patient.
Pizhichil
Pizhichil is one of Kerala’s special ayurvedic treatment. The patient is made to lie on a wooden drone. Then pieces of linen dipped in warm medicated oil are squeezed over the patient’s body in a special rhythmic way continuously. The treatment takes 45-60 minutes and is applied daily for 7-14 days.
It is effective in rheumatic problems, osteo arthritis, insomnia, depression, muscular aches and pains..
Njavara Kizhi
Medicated oil is first applied liberally over the patient’s body. Then the body is massaged with linen bags filled with medicated rice pudding.
Njavara Kizhi is one of the special massages, which rejuvenates the body. It is very effective in muscular dystrophy, emaciation, hypertension, high cholesterol and some types of skin diseases.
Elakizhi
Fresh leaves of herbs are poured into cotton bags, immersed in warm medicated oil. Then the body is massaged with those cotton bags for 30-45 minutes. This treatment is effective for osteoarthritis, spondylosis, sports injuries, arthritis, swelling, etc…
Shiro Vasti
Shiro Vashti consists of keeping the medicated oil at a bearable temperature in a leather cap fitted around the head of the patient. This treatment is highly effective for facial paralysis, dryness of nostrils, mouth, and throat, headache, facial paralysis, speech difficulties, insomnia, nervous disorders and other diseases of the head.
Januvasti
Januvasti is the process by lukewarm medicated oil is kept over the knee joint in a reservoir made of herbal dough and is allowed to act for 30-45 minutes. It is effective for osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and acute & chronic diseases of knee joints.
Kati Vasti
Kati Vasti is the process that warm medicated oil is kept over the low back in a ring of herbal dough and is allowed to act for 30-45 minutes. Kati Vasti is effective for low back pain, degenerative diseases, disc prolapsed, etc…
Njavaratheppu/Annalepam
Njavaratheppu/Annalepam, A special type of rice called Njavara is boiled and cooked in medicated milk. Then it is applied to the body for 30-60 minutes. This is an effective treatment for all types of arthritic changes, emaciation of limbs and muscles, joint pains, etc…
Dhanyamla Dhara
Dhanyamla Dhara, In this Luke warm specially prepared medicated liquid is poured all over the body or a part of the body in a rhythmic way from a narrow-necked vessel for 30-60 minutes. Dhanyamla Dhara is effective in paralysis, swelling, rheumatic complaints, hemiplegic conditions, etc…
Udwarthana

Vasti
